Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong | Johann Hari

Johann Hari beautifully explains the actual influences behind any form of addiction in our lives. We’ve always thought that the problem was predominantly genetic or individual based, but its rather a social front.

What really causes addiction — to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do — and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal talk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways of thinking about an age-old problem.

Listen to Johann as he makes this perfectly clear and understandable. Feel free to share your opinions below.

Very informative. Thanks for sharing! It makes perfect sense that people will more likely wilfully draw away from addiction if they have a much better connected life. The power of love tramps fear and stigma. I love this!!

I concur. He makes very interesting and more-so accurate statements. When someone is willing to take their life, more threats are less likely to yield good results, but the opposite of what their fears are – hope, love, and strong relationships are much more likely to spark fruition.
